Lets vote our values

A few days ago, Focus on the Family sent out a letter encouraging voters to vote their values. Since I thought it had some interesting points on what a Democratic congress would look like, I’ve pasted it below.

Dear Friends,

On the eve of an historic election, I’m writing to share with you two new developments that should give every social conservative all the motivation they need to go to the polls on Election Day. Please take a moment to read this and then pass it along to friends, family and fellow church members.

First, the judicial activists have struck again! Last week, New Jersey’s highest court ruled that the state Legislature must create same-sex marriage or civil unions within 180 days. Once again, gay activists and liberal courts have dealt a stunning blow to supporters of traditional marriage. But what does this new ruling have to do with your voting?

* If you live in one of the eight states where a state marriage-protection amendment is on the ballot, your vote is urgently needed to support the amendment. By amending your state constitution, you will keep state judges from overturning your marriage laws as they already have in Massachusetts and now New Jersey. Those states are Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia and Wisconsin.
* But no matter where you live, this New Jersey ruling makes your vote in this election critical. That’s because congressional action will almost certainly be needed to keep every state in the nation from suffering the fallout of this ruling.

You see, New Jersey - unlike Massachusetts - has no state law banning marriages that would be illegal in another state. That means that homosexual couples from your state are likely to “marry” in New Jersey and return to challenge your state laws in federal court. And only Congress can limit the federal courts’ power on this.

What’s more, the U.S. Senate has the power - along with the president - to control which judges sit on the federal courts. With at least 10 U.S. Senate races hanging in the balance, the consequences of Election Day are enormous!

That leads me to the second major development of the last 10 days. The ultra-liberal Nancy Pelosi – aided by her liberal allies in the media - has begun openly scheming about her potential new job. In case you haven’t heard, if the Democrats take control of the U.S. House, Nancy Pelosi will be the new speaker of the House and second in line to be president.

Let me tell you why that statement should send chills up your spine. Nancy Pelosi is a San Francisco Democrat who has repeatedly won re-election in one of the most liberal districts in the nation. This is a woman who last month told TIME magazine, “I pride myself in being called a liberal. I don’t consider myself a moderate.” No kidding. Consider her record:

* On abortion, there is not a more pro-abortion politician in Congress. She voted against banning partial-birth abortion at least eight times and has repeatedly opposed the Unborn Victims of Violence Act. Not surprisingly, she gets “perfect” ratings from Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America.
* On marriage, she is among the most radically anti-marriage members of Congress, and she works hard for the radical gay agenda. Not only does she oppose the Marriage Protection Amendment, she even opposed the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, which was supported by all but a handful of the most liberal members.
* On issues of national security (remember, federal law places the speaker of the House right behind the vice president in order of presidential succession), Nancy Pelosi has a record that is soft on defense, soft on terrorism and soft on intelligence:

o She voted to cut intelligence funding both before and after 9/11
o She voted against the $87 billion appropriation for our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, which included funds for body armor
o She voted against the creation of the Homeland Security Department and the reauthorization of the Patriot Act
o She voted against a missile defense system - crucial in light of North Korea’s nuclear tests
o She was one of just a few members to vote against prohibiting U.S. citizens and companies from conducting financial transactions with countries identified by the State Department as active sponsors of terrorism
o She voted against a security fence on our southern border

She has even made clear that she would install Florida Congressman Alcee Hastings as Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee. Hastings is a former federal judge who was indicted on charges of influence peddling, impeached by the House, and then convicted by the Senate and removed from his judgeship. As the Wall Street Journal reported in August, Hastings “was impeached and convicted by a Democratic Congress for lying to beat a bribery rap. He would handle America ’s most vital national secrets.”

But that’s just the beginning of what a Pelosi-controlled House would look like. After all, the House would be controlled by committee chairmen who share Pelosi’s liberal views.

* The critically important Judiciary Committee would be led by John Conyers, who has a 100 percent voting record with the ACLU.
* The Education Committee would be chaired by George Miller, the California congressman who made a name for himself in the 1990s by trying to cripple home schooling in America.
* The Financial Services Committee’s chairman would be Barney Frank, the outspoken homosexual congressman from Massachusetts who once allowed a homosexual brothel to be run out of his D.C. apartment.
* And that’s not to mention Henry Waxman, Charles Rangel and a host of other notoriously liberal congressmen who would wield the gavel for their respective committees.

I’m not asking you to vote for a particular candidate, but I am pleading with you to get out and vote your values on Election Day. The future of our nation depends on it!

Perhaps the most disturbing development of the last month is the blatant, and even admitted, attempt by liberals in government and the media to discourage Christian conservatives from even voting. Don’t fall for it!

Yes, there is plenty to be exasperated with regarding politicians of every political stripe. But I hope I’ve conveyed to you the great threat that looms if people of faith fail to exercise their right and responsibility to vote.

The liberals know what a difference values voters made in 2004, so they have tried to discourage you from voting. I hope you’ll help give the liberals one big surprise on Election Night by not only voting yourself, but by doing everything in your power to get friends, family and other likeminded voters to the polls on Nov. 7. Above all, please pray for God’s divine intervention on behalf of righteousness in our nation.

Finally, blessings to you and your family. We appreciate you, and we value the opportunity to be an encouragement and resource to you.

Sincerely,

Tom Minnery
