License plates and free speech

Another step has been taken in the quest for a New York pro-life license plate. Already thirteen states have these specialty plates with the slogan “Choose Life” — and they have proved remarkable popular.

The New York DMV has initially refused to grant The Children First Foundation their proposed license plate because it was “too political and controversial” and offensive to a large part of the population. Last August when their petition didn’t go anywhere, the foundation filed a lawsuit against New York for discriminating against them.

Two days ago Wednesday, the judge in the U.S. district court refused to the state’s request to dismiss the lawsuit, stating “the court is convinced that The Children First Foundation has sufficiently alleged constitutional violations.”
